“The first to arrive weren’t looking for luxury. They were looking for authenticity.”

The first English clients who walked into our office weren’t simply buyers. In a way, they were pioneers.

They arrived in Sicily after visiting Syracuse and Ortigia, cities that even then were beginning to attract international tourism. But, almost always, their journey continued southward.

When we took them out to the countryside of the Val di Noto, something special happened. They fell silent. They weren’t struck only by the beauty of the landscape, but by its authenticity.

They found a countryside still untouched: dry-stone walls, ancient trees, farmhouses nestled in greenery, and a silence full of the sounds of nature — cicadas in the hottest hours, birdsong in the morning, the wind moving through the carob trees.

For many of them, all of this was a discovery. They came from countries where the countryside had long since been transformed. Here, instead, they had the sense of finding a nature still free, still able to keep its own rhythm.

Many told us that this was exactly what had won them over. They weren’t looking for a luxury villa. They were looking for an authentic place, somewhere to slow down and build a simpler life, closer to nature.

For us too, every visit was a discovery. Accompanying those first foreign clients, we learned to look at the land with new eyes. Often it was they who pointed out details that we, living there every day, risked taking for granted.

We came to understand that the true wealth of the Val di Noto wasn’t only its extraordinary baroque architecture. It was the balance between landscape, nature, and time.

That’s when I began to understand something that would stay with me throughout my work: we weren’t selling countryside properties, we were accompanying people who were searching for a place to rediscover a different way of living.

Today many of those country estates have changed, many farmhouses have been restored, and the Val di Noto is known all over the world. But when I think back to those first English clients, what I see most is their wonder at a nature that still seemed to hold on to an older time.

Perhaps they truly were pioneers. And, without knowing it, they were opening up, alongside us, a new season for the Val di Noto.
